BACK STORY.
OUR MISSION: TO LISTEN, SERVE, ASSIST, ADVISE AND PROVIDE TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND INFORMATION FOR ALL ASPECTS OF YOUR PROJECT: FROM HOUSE-LOTS OF FLOORING, PANELLING, WEATHERBOARD, DECKING, BEAMS AND POSTS; TO MAORI CARVING, POU, WAKA, MARAE PROJECTS; TO JOINERY, WOODCRAFT, SCUPTURE, LANDSCAPING …… ALL IN N.Z’S FINEST AND MOST VERSATILE AND DURABLE NATIVE TIMBER, TOTARA.
Heartland Timbers started in 2015 as Windfall Timbers, which was set up to provide creative employment opportunities in the dying timber industry on the Coast, starting with the salvage of windblown native trees on NZ’s West Coast of the South Island following the vast destruction of native forests in the region.
Starting with some farm blocks in South Westland, we secured contracts with some local farmers and obtained full licenses and approvals from MPI. We then set about creating a logging operation from scratch, including trucks, skidder, digger, various portable sawmills, loader, caravans as site office, chainsaws etc, and spent a couple of years extracting large volumes of totara with some matai and kahikatea (white pine).
Around 140 cubic metres of logs were milled on the site and trucked to our rural site near Westport for filleting and seasoning. A further large cubage of logs was moved to our site awaiting milling orders.
We purchased a large commercial complex in Wakefield St near the centre of Westport and renovated it into offices, storage areas and machinery workshop for complete processing of the timber into finished timber flooring, paneling, mouldings, etc. We also established an operation in Nelson for finishing and sales. Specialising in totara, we are also rebuilding an historic ship in Nelson as an example of the amazing character and qualities of the timber and as a Nelson office and design studio.
To develop product lines and build the market we can now offer a range of totara items including finished flooring, panelling, character flitches and mouldings etc, now available in limited quantities and accept pre-orders for our large stock of seasoned timber and mill our log stockpile to order, including matai and kahikatea.
